Tips for online tutoring
Be ready a few minutes early
Online tutoring can often involve a few technical issues at the start, so it’s worth being ready for your tutorial 5-10 minutes before it starts.
Come prepared with questions
The most effective sessions are those where students attend with a clear idea of what they want to discuss. Logging into your room with a list of questions or ideas you would like to discuss is a great way of getting the most out of your tutorial!
Use a drawing tablet or second camera
Often it helps for the tutor to see your work and writing directly. If you have devices that allow for digital writing, that works well, but don’t worry if you don’t have one! Sign into the google meets room on two devices, such as a laptop and phone. Your second camera (such as the phone) can sit on top of some books to show your workbook in the meeting. If you would like help optimising your online tutoring setup, feel free to ask for help!
Narrate your working and thoughts
This is a funny one, but trust us! Learning and understanding does not stop with getting the correct answer on a question. It can be very helpful to ‘narrate’ your thoughts while approaching a question so that your tutor can pick up on slight gaps in understanding or technique.
Upload tests and worksheets
If you would like to work on specific textbook chapters, problem sets or go through past test results, it is important that your tutor can easily follow along! For online tutoring, this often means taking a brief moment to upload a scanned pdf of your document before logging into your tutorial. If you need help with this, just ask! There are great phone apps that can help you easily scan and send documents.

Until we automate group tutorial bookings (we’re working on it!), if you are interested in group tutoring you will need to express your interest and what times work for you. If at least three students express interest in the same tutorial at the same time, we will contact you and create a group session.
